a sign in Thai for trains to stop

Keeping things consistent is difficult and has always been my biggest challenge. Growing up, I started countless projects but rarely finished them unless deadlines and grades were involved. It’s not that I need that external pressure to stay motivated … I just needed to enter the flow state. If I couldn’t find a way to enter the flow, I wouldn’t be able to finish anything. And I can’t really do things I don’t like or am not passionate about. Are you like that too?

You know what I learnt, though? I learnt to find a way to enter that flow state. I just need to play some Joe Hisaishi’s music and start working. I’ve been listening to Joe’s music since university. My brain associates his music with work and study, especially Merry-Go-Round of Life. So, Joe’s music has always been my trick for motivating myself and achieving the consistency needed to finish what I start.

Self-motivation is a skill that takes practice. My old self would have wanted to perfect it, but my current self wants to stick with things a little bit longer each day, do it day in and day out, and trust that things will fall into place.

So, I will write every day – on this blog. The entries probably won’t be the same length, but I will keep at it. This, for me, is one of the biggest challenges I want to overcome this year. It’s about showing up, not perfecting it. Right?

For those who have been writing for years without fail, give us strength (and tips)! And for those of us who are pursuing writing, let’s do this together. We’ve got this!
